Her Rebel Highness The Characters

Princess Gwendolyn of Maritopia
A ravishing beauty with an appetite for seduction

GwendolynWebHeadshotAs the youngest child of the very well respected and much loved King and Queen of Maritopia, Princess Gwendolyn was the pride and joy of her doting parents and their loyal subjects alike for many, many years. The fair-haired beauty was a good humoured child, innately well-behaved and sensible. However, by the time Gwendolyn came of age, it seemed that excessive overindulgence eventually took its toll and she became increasingly demanding and difficult to please. As of late, she has begun to declare that the gowns and jewels her father commissions are not sufficiently fine and that the balls he holds in her name are not sufficiently grand! But this is not the worst of it… Gwendolyn has also acquired an appetite for seducing and corrupting well-connected, good-intentioned young men and has been said to have broken up as many as two dozen engagements. She revels in the head-turning effect she has on a room but when alone, Gwendolyn laments over being betrothed to King Frederick of Austania, whom she does not love. With her wedding day looming, Gwendolyn must succeed in convincing her parents to break the engagement.

Princess Antonina of Crusilius
A dutiful daughter with a song in her heart

Princess AntoninaPrincess Antonina is the eldest of five female siblings and has been a trusted advisor to her mother, the Queen of Crusilius, since losing her father to consumption just two years ago. She is a dutiful daughter and tentative sister, yet she finds her newly-found responsibilities overwhelming and sometimes suffocating. Antonina often finds herself reminiscing about the days her parents would discuss matters of great importance behind closed doors while she busily prepared herself for an evening party, at which she always performed an aria or two. But those days are gone forever. Her mother, the Queen, has made her wish to abdicate the throne by the end of year quite clear. Antonina must begin to prepare herself, but alas, she no desire to ever become Queen and has admitted as much to her mother during a recent quarrel! Antonina is a hopeless romantic and true songbird and has no head for politics in the least. In lieu of visiting with heads of state, the delicate princess daydreams of sitting at her pianoforte and singing the new opera that Mozart himself very recently composed for her. Can Antonina possibly will herself into fulfilling her destiny and becoming Queen of Crusilius?

Princess Victoria of Austania
The bold and ambitious ringleader

Princess Victoria

Princess Victoria is the ambitious, outspoken, elder sister of the King of Austania. She has always dreamed of being Queen and has had a passion for politics ever since sitting on her late papa’s knee at Court and overhearing discussions about the kingdom’s future. It pains Victoria on a daily basis that she herself is not Ruler of Austania, due to existing laws that state male heirs take precedence over female heirs. Victoria’s views are universally considered quite progressive, while her brother’s views are staunchly traditional, and this monumental difference between the siblings fuels their contentious relationship. Victoria has much affection for her brother to be sure, however she cannot fathom his resistance to new ideas and most importantly, cannot comprehend his unwillingness to admit her into parliament as a voting member, simply because no woman has ever been admitted to-date. Although the princess has many high-spirited, like-minded friends at Court, the more general view throughout the realm and beyond, is that she is the obstinate sister of the rightful king, who really ought to make better use of her time hosting royal galas and making herself agreeable to a charming prince!

Queen Lucinda of Zeylon
The formidable queen with a tortured soul

LucindaHeadShot-HomePageHaving ascended to the throne a mere nine months ago, the formidable Queen Lucinda of Zeylon is wasting no time making her mark. Armed with fearlessness, unparalleled intelligence and a small yet dedicated navy, Lucinda has her sights on becoming the most powerful and revered ruler of all. The novice queen has been somewhat of a mystery for many years now. Once a free-spirited young princess who loved to dance and be out in society, Lucinda practically became a recluse by the age of twenty, not doing so much as responding to letters from her acquaintances abroad. Rumor has it that with age, her father, the late king, grew more and more displeased with her, simply because Lucinda had not been born a boy and it was coming apparent that he may never indeed have a son to succeed him. And he did not. Since becoming Queen, Lucinda has been much in public, rallying her subjects with her grandiose plans for the future of their kingdom, but has never once shown her face. Her features, which are said to be very striking, remain inconspicuously concealed behind a veil. Will Lucinda succeed in leading her kingdom to glory, or will she lead them into peril?

King Frederick of Austania
The good and noble leader

King-WebHeadshotKing Frederick is the epitome of a good, noble and revered king. He has been ruling Austania these five years and will do whatever he must to make his kingdom a prosperous and peaceful place, including marrying Princess Gwendolyn of Maritopia, primarily for political gain. Frederick is universally known for his bravery and as a matter of course leads his navy into battle in times of war. The king, however, manages to avoid conflict more often than not, as many realms fear his wrath. The sovereign is also a renowned traditionalist, a trait somewhat uncommon in so young a man. Frederick believes that there is great honor in tradition and can frequently be overheard at Court saying that, “The old way is always the best way”. It has been proven that this way of thinking produces a happy effect on members of parliament and his subjects alike, therefore, when his sister, Princess Victoria, insists that some law or other be amended to better suit the times they live in, Frederick does not concede. The monarch has no real thoughts of grandeur and solely wishes to proceed as before, marry and father an heir or two.

Martin Turner
The hilarious, unlikely emissary

MartinTurner-WebHeadshotDespite never knowing the basic luxuries that most of us commonly take for granted, that is, having enough food in our stomachs to keep them from grumbling and having a warm, comfortable bed to lay our heads at night, Martin Turner has always worn a smile on his gaunt, weathered face. As the first son of twelve born to a close-knit farming family in Zeylon, it was essential for Martin to begin work on the family’s dairy farm at the tender age of six, and work he did. Though by far not the brightest of his family, Martin was known as the most kind-hearted and loving. Whenever one of his siblings were too tired to finish their allotted tasks, Martin would never hesitate to lend a hand, without ever taking credit for doing so. At the age of sixteen, he made his loving parents eternally and immeasurably proud by securing a gardening position on the grounds of Zeylon’s royal castle. Working closely by the grounds keeper’s side, Martin continues to hone his skills, be jolly and not wish for a life other than the one he has always known.
